Large logistics order with several custom-built features: solutions for active and passive temperature control, spare capacity for emergencies, IT driven processes to improve protection against forgery
(Neunkirchen) AstraZeneca GmbH, German subsidiary of the globally active pharmaceutical group based in the UK and Sweden, has entrusted healthcare logistics specialist Movianto with central warehousing and distribution of its goods in Germany. “With Movianto we found a partner who has 25 years of experience in distribution of drugs and who will guarantee nationwide supply of our pharmaceutical products in the future”, says Robert Tubis, Head of Sales Service of AZ. In 2020 the pharmaceutical group invited tenders for this logistics services. This year Movianto received the order and is now storing the AZ goods at its logistics site in Neunkirchen in the federal state of Saarland. Beneath Germany the logistics service provider is working for AZ in France, the UK and the Netherlands.
“The order includes several logistics challenges which helped us to score in the tender and to show our experience and special knowhow”, adds Dennis Spamer, Managing Director of Movianto Germany. “For AZ is has been and will be essential to handle every single product exactly according to its special sensitivity, for example in terms of temperature.”
Moreover, there are as well pharmacies as hospitals as pharmaceutical wholesalers who are directly supplied from the central warehouse in Neunkirchen. “Therefore we have small parcel shipments with relatively low numbers of items and at the same time large bulk orders on pallets”, Spamer describes. In consequence the healthcare logistics specialist has developed different strategies for picking and packing which are used in parallel for the same client.
Last but not least there are two main further features belonging to the specialities of the logistics solution of AZ: IT driven processes to improve protection against forgery and a business continuity plan (BCP). It guarantees full functionality in case of emergency. Spamer explanes: “For the BCP our logistics site in Kist near Würzburg serves as backup logistics center. There, we provide spare capacity and we are able to switch shipping from Neuenkirchen to Kist in an approved period of time.”
